Just bought a new home, or wanting to redecorate? Trying to figure out how to fill in those big empty spaces or blank walls? Sometimes decorating can be a daunting task, but don’t be scared about that big empty space. In fact, empty spaces offer the opportunity to let you make the space a unique reflection of you and your style. But, before you dive in and start decorating, here are some tips to consider:

Focal Point

Everything revolves around something, including living spaces. Find a focal point, nucleus, centerpiece or whatever you’d like to call it, but keep in mind that this area must bring something special to the space. It should be inviting and provoke conversation among your guests. It could be a window with a wonderful view, a coffee table to gather around, or a cozy fireplace (if you do not live in tropical places). Once you’ve chosen your nucleus, surround it with seating, and design elements that complement the tone that it sets for the space. Remember, your nucleus is likely to be the place where a lot of time is spent, so work on making it as comfortable as possible.

Plan

It’s nice to suddenly be at a furniture store and find the piece of furniture of your dreams, but before you make that delightful purchase, you should take careful measurements, make sure it will fit in your home and match the style of the rest of your décor to always ensure harmony. If you’re confident that it fits just right, then make your purchase! It’s great to have a sudden burst of creativity, but taking a methodical approach to your planning will help increase the level of satisfaction you get out of the experience.

Clutter

We all have little trinkets and things, both big and small, which naturally become a part of our lives throughout the years. Over time, these things develop more and more intrinsic value, but how they fit into our spaces must evolve over time. Space has its own harmonizing effect on the senses, but clutter can easily disrupt the feel of a space, because it takes the breathing room out of it. Just like we need to breathe, so do our living spaces. That being said, there’s a place for everything, and everything should be in its place. Work on placing your loose paper into folders, put your books on shelves, and put your keepsakes in places where you can admire them. When it comes to all the things that you feel you’ve been holding on to, but you can do without, let them go. You can give them to a friend, or someone who needs them. Once you’ve taken the clutter out of your space you’ll see how everything starts to work together to create a place of harmony for you to enjoy. That’s the gift of space!
