Coral Gables Elementary Schools: Lottery or No Lottery?

The answer is YES, LOTTERY. At least for now. If you’re sending your child to a public elementary school in Coral Gables there are three public school options: Sunset Elementary, George Washington Carver, & Coral Gables Elementary School. Parents can rank their preferences amongst these and then enter a lottery that will determine their assignment. This system is called “controlled choice” and Coral Gables is the last region in Miami-Dade County to have this system in effect.

So although we are a lottery system now, the ultimate decision will come in June. The Coral Gables City Commission requested the Miami-Dade County Public School System (MDCPS) to release Coral Gables from controlled choice. If accepted, new boundaries would be drawn allowing students to attend one of the three schools based on proximity. Late February, The MDCPS Attendance Boundary Committee voted in favor of ending controlled choice, however, in early March the Diversity, Equity, and Excellence Advisory Committee voted against the Gable’s request. So lottery or no lottery? . . . Come June . . . TBD.
